The Grupo Mayan’s Temazcal – The Ancient Art of the Sweat Lodge in Mexico

An essential amenity found on most Spas is the sauna. The Grupo Mayan Resorts spa professionals know this and you will find them at the Brio Spas at their different destinations.

In ancient Mexico —as in many different cultures around the world, like Scandinavia, Italy, North Africa, India, Russia and Turkey— the sauna, called temazcal or temazcalli in Mexican culture, was essential for traditional medicine. The Grupo Mayan experts support that even the North American Native Americans and Canadian Indians had their own Medicinal Sweat Lodge purification ceremonies.

Sweating is commonly known as a means to eliminate impurities from the body, as well as aiding the skin, liver, blood circulation, rheumatisms, arthritis, gout, sore muscles pain and spasms, common colds and minor respiratory problems, etc. The Grupo Mayan spa professionals state that It diminishes stress, activates the immune system and detoxifies the body. It cleanses and rejuvenates from the inside out by allowing you to regain spiritual energy.

The main structure of a temazcal is a dome made out of clay or bricks. They are built based on the cosmological belief that it is a micro cosmos reproducing the universe characteristics and its elements use the cardinal points – earth, wind, fire and water. The heated rocks are placed to the east to recreate the sun’s everyday emergence. The dome is considered to be the earth’s womb where life is born. The Grupo Mayan Resorts technicians point out that the door to exit and enter the temazcal is positioned to the west, “death’s pathway”, symbolizing the daily birth and death of the sun (duality). The temperature inside of the dome is symbolic as well, since the upper area its upper part being the hottest area.

The act of entering a temazcal represents going back to our mother’s womb to heal any physical or spiritual illness. Guided by the “temazcalero” (male) or “temazcalera” (female), chants, prayers and spiritual invocations are performed throughout the ritual. The guide pours water over the herbs on the heated volcanic rocks to create a scented steam. Then the act of leaving the temazcal symbolizes a spiritual rebirth.

The Grupo Mayan Resorts spa professionals have recreated this ritual at the Brio Spa’s at Nuevo Vallarta, Acapulco and coming soon, at The Grand Mayan Los Cabos; providing a safe environment to obtain the benefits of this unique experience, which you cannot miss when you visit one of these locations.

Important Things to Avoid Doing at the Spa

Most people are unfamiliar with the etiquette that should be observed at a spa and often make the job of spa professionals much harder to accomplish.  Grupo Mayan spa professionals reveal some of the most common mistakes people make concerning their spa sessions.

Do not arrive at 11 a.m. for an 11 a.m. appointment.  Your appointment may be for 11 a.m., but you only have the time allotted.  If you are getting a massage, you only have the one-hour time frame.  You may have to fill out some paperwork when you arrive so you should consider arriving early.  If you arrive directly on time, you still have to change and prepare for the massage.  This will eat into your time and you will not have the opportunity to get the most out of your session.

You are usually at a spa to relax.  Do not talk about your problems at work, with your finances, husband, boyfriend, children, or anything that will stress you out.  You should not expect a miracle when you get a treatment.  Not everyone can remove all his or her muscle tension in one session.  You should avoid a workout just before a massage.  If you show up sweaty, the massage will be no fun for you or your therapist.  Do not partake of the Jacuzzi and then have a massage or facial done.  You should remove the chlorine from your skin before having your treatment done.

Grupo Mayan spa professionals reveal that most spas work very hard to create a relaxing atmosphere that everyone can enjoy.  Do not talk on your cell phone while you are waiting for a treatment (even if you are in the lounge).  You will destroy the mood and ruin things for everyone else.  No matter how cute you think that ring tone is, people will be disturbed by the call.  You may be the customer, and the customer is always right.  However, you will not get the best service you can by being rude, bossing people around, and treating the staff poorly.

After you finish a treatment, you should take a few moments to relax.  Do not rush away and undo the hard work that your spa professional has done for you.  Avoid a heavy meal after a massage.  Water is important for your skinís hydration.  Grupo Mayan spa professionals recommend that you tip appropriately.  You do not have to, but tipping recognizes the hard work that these professionals provide for you.  Tip based on your satisfaction with the spa treatment.

Spa Treatments: Facials 101

Grupo Mayan spa professionals reveal that the facial is the second most requested treatment done at spas.  A facial involves a thorough deep cleansing of the skin on your face.  A facial will help to promote clear and well-hydrated skin.

The first step in a facial is to clean the skin with cotton pads or some type of sponge with a product that has been selected for your skinís condition.  These conditions can include normal, oily, dry, sensitive, mature, or a combination of all of them.  An analysis of the skin is completed next.  A certified esthetician should examine your skin under a brightly lit lamp that will magnify your skin and its condition.

Next, an exfoliation should be completed.  The facial moves forward with the removal of blackheads or whiteheads.  The removal can be painful for some skin types or if the technician does not have the skill required.  A facial massage will be applied with classic strokes to help you to relax.  The facial massage should stimulate your skin and facial muscles.  The facial mask is applied next and the type of mask will depend on your skin condition.  Finally, toners and protective lotions may be applied.  To wrap up the procedure, your esthetician should make some recommendations for taking care of your skin at home.

Grupo Mayan spa professionals recommend the facial because it has many health benefits that you can take advantage of.  Your face is often exposed to many harsh elements including the sun, smoke, or other agents in the air.  A facial can provide your skin with a deep cleansing that will help your skin to be rejuvenated.  Exfoliation helps to unclog pores and rid your facial skin of acne.  One of the most popular reasons that people undergo a facial is to help slow the premature aging process of your skin.  Hydrated skin is important if you want to avoid wrinkles.

An esthetician can teach you what types of cleansers, lotions, and other skin products you should be using.  Many women make the mistake in assuming their skin is one type when it often is something different.  Applying the wrong type of skin cleanser can make your condition worse.  If you plan to spend time at a spa, be sure you get try a facial to see what it can do for you.  Grupo Mayan spa professionals are trained to provide you with the information to make your facial a healthy experience you will not soon forget.

Saving Money on your Spa Vacation

Everyone is looking for ways to stretch their money, even when taking a vacation.  If you are planning a spa vacation, a number of ways exist that will allow you to save money and still have a great experience.  Grupo Mayan has some tips that you can use for your next spa vacation.

Make sure you know what kind of spa you will have access to on your vacation stay.  Is the spa included in the cost of your trip or are there extra charges for the treatments.  Many places have cheaper prices for those who stay in the middle of the week.

Check out the website for the place you want to stay out.  See if the site has any special prices that you can take advantage of.  Donít fall for everything that is labeled a special.  Some places may take regular services, put them together, and call it a special when the price is no cheaper than if you had done it yourself.

Use the Internet to see what spa services are available and what people think of the service provided.  You can find great tips on how to get the best service and still save money from other people who done the same treatment you enjoy.  Another great way to save money is the ëfrequent spa-erí programs that many places are beginning to offer.  The more often you have a treatment done or visit a certain location may entitle you to a discount or free services.

Saving money on your spa vacation can also be accomplished by visiting during off-season times.  Rates can be quite reduced during times that people do not usually visit the location.  Some of the best deals cannot be found anywhere except by providing your email to spa locations.  They do not want to advertise these deals but will make them available to those who have provided an email.  Last minute deals, cancellations, free treatments, classes and lectures that may be available can be provided to the exclusive few who sign up with their email address.

One of the best methods to reduce your costs is to take advantage of all the extras a spa has when you visit.  Sign up for a treatment and then arrive early.  Use the pool, sauna, workout room, lounge, and steam room before your session and again after you are done.  Make a day of the experience without spending a lot of money.

You can save money and have a wonderful time with these tips from Grupo Mayan.

Spa Etiquette Tips for Men

Grupo Mayan spa technicians suggest men consider these guidelines for spa etiquette.  If you want to avoid some of the embarrassing and uncomfortable moments that happen to about 80% of men, these guidelines will help you to be one of the ëiní men.

Always arrive early for your appointment.  At least ten minutes will allow you to fill out any intake forms that may be required.  You want to be able to get the full time your treatment allows and you may lose some if you have to fill in forms because you arrived at the appointed time.  Another advantage is that you should shower before your massage.  If you arrive early, you have the opportunity to use the showers.  Now your masseur will be ready to rub you down instead of run away.

A spa is a place of relaxation.  Grupo Mayan technicians reveal that most spas work very hard to create this atmosphere.  Calm and soothing music may be played in the background and lights kept to a proper illumination.  One of the worse things you can do is to raise your voice while in the spa.  You can spoil the atmosphere the spa has worked so hard to create.  Be sure to turn your cell phone and other hand held electronic devices off before you begin your treatment.  Once again, you can break the relaxing illusion that is being created.

If you are getting a massage or a body treatment, men have the choice to wear their underwear or go bare.  You do not have to explain to your technician if you choose to keep your underwear on.  He or she will understand.  You should be as open with your spa technician as you can about allergies, medications that may affect your skin, torn ligaments, or medical conditions you may have.  Grupo spa technicians only want to make your experience the best it can be.

You are not required to shave before a treatment, but a fresh shave can reveal razor burn, ingrown hairs, or areas of your neck that become irritated.  A facialist can address these areas only if he or she can see them.  Avoid using any type of body lotion because it will be more painful if you are getting a back waxing.  If you use Retin-A or Accutane, inform your technician so he or she can avoid taking any skin off.

Always tip your spa technician for his or her excellent work.  A 20% tip is appreciated and it can get you extra care the next time you visit.

Spa Tips from Grupo Mayan

Are you planning a spa vacation in the near future?  Some important information that you should consider about the possible spas you might use is listed below.  Grupo Mayan hopes you will consider this information before making your next trip.

A successful spa vacation depends on many factors and not just the spa itself.  One of the best parts about taking advantage of the spa experience at Grupo Mayan is that your significant other can take advantage of the golfing experience while you enjoy the spas.  Not all spas are created equal.  Some companies use this term to describe a two room area in the back of a fitness center and others may mean a 22 room complete with all the amenities.

Your spa should offer many extras for you to enjoy.  A workout facility, wet and dry saunas, aromatherapy rooms, hot and cold plunge pools, quiet lounges, and complimentary classes, are just a few of these extras to look for.  Amenities can also include shower and beauty products, robes, slippers, towels, hair dryers, herbal teas, bottled water, fruits, and other healthy goods.

A great spa vacation does not have to involve complicated bookings.  You can arrive early and stay late.  Take advantage of the many other facilities that you can use while you are waiting for your booking or after you have finished.  Try steaming in the sauna, workouts in the gym, relaxing in the lounge before and after your treatment.  Check out what packages the facility might offer.  Many places have great deals to get you to try out treatments you may not have had before.

Do a little research about what each treatment includes.  You will feel more comfortable if you have some knowledge of the treatment than if you just show up and hope for the best.  Do not be afraid to ask questions.  You are paying for the service and deserve to know what you are getting for your money.

Make sure the people who will be providing the services are experienced therapists.  A therapist is passionate about the work he or she does and will make your experience a better one.  Avoid the kind of person that just does the treatment and moves on to the next person, without any regard for how you feel about the treatment.  If you can visit the spa in advance, you can get a better idea of what to expect.  Many companies have virtual tours available on their websites.

A spa vacation should be an experience to remember.  Grupo Mayan hopes these tips will help you to prepare for your next spa vacation.
